Monocular, binocular or panoramic: which form factor you actually need
The form factor decides how you look through the night. The tube decides what you see. Those two questions get mixed up constantly, and that is why people buy a binocular when what they needed was a better tube.
The short version: a monocular is enough for most uses and is the lightest and cheapest form factor. A binocular earns its keep if you wear the device for hours, move across terrain or work with your hands. You buy a panoramic goggle when you need to look around rather than look through. The rest is reasoning.
Monocular: one eye free
A monocular puts one eye behind the tube and leaves the other one alone. That eye keeps its natural dark adaptation. It reads a map or a display without amplification, and when you flip the device up you see normally at once, instead of waiting to readjust to the dark.
The price for that sits in perception, not in mechanics. Your brain gets two very different pictures, one bright and amplified, one dark and natural, and has to keep deciding which one counts. It can be learned, and most people have it after a few nights. It still stays more tiring than two matching pictures, and over a long night you notice.
There is also this: through the device you have no depth perception. You judge distance from experience, motion parallax and terrain, not from stereopsis. From a fixed observation position that barely matters. Climbing down over root systems it does.
The selection sits under single tube night vision monoculars. Two devices, two philosophies: the DTD Jerry 14 weighs 250 g without battery according to its specification and works with manual gain control, the DTD PVS-14 takes objectives in the PVS-14 pattern and works with autogating.
Binocular: what the second tube buys
First, what it does not buy: a better picture. Each eye looks through its own tube, and image quality per eye hangs on that tube, not on how many of them there are. A binocular in the lowest tube grade shows you a worse picture than a monocular in the highest. That is the most common expensive mistake in this category.
What the second tube really buys is two things. First, depth perception: distance is seen rather than estimated, most clearly at close and medium range, which is exactly where you climb over obstacles, step across a fence or work with your hands. Second, noticeably less fatigue over hours, because both eyes get the same brightness level and the conflict of monocular use falls away.
That costs weight and money. The jump is bigger than most people expect: where the specification gives 250 g without battery for the Jerry 14, it gives 480 g for the DTD Jerry 31, and under 450 g with tubes for the DTD PVS-31. Two tubes also mean two tube data sheets and twice the tube price, which explains the larger part of the premium.
One detail that gets lost in the form factor debate: field of view is not fixed on a binocular either. The DTD 1431 MkII takes objectives in the PVS-14 pattern, commercially in 40 and 51 degrees. That is the cheaper route to more field of view than four tubes, and it is not free: the same tube spreads across more angle, so detail resolution per degree drops. All three devices sit under dual tube night vision binoculars.
Panoramic: four tubes, around 100 degrees
A binocular gives you around 40 degrees of field of view. A panoramic device with four tubes opens that to about 100 degrees, with two additional outward angled channels extending the picture sideways. That is the difference between looking through and looking around.
In practice it means less head movement to take in your surroundings, and lateral vision that survives while you move. Anyone moving fast, working in a team, changing levels or driving gains the most here. Anyone observing in one direction from a fixed position gains almost nothing and pays anyway.
Two honest limitations. The picture is not a seamless panorama, it is assembled from four channels, and whether the transitions bother you is decided by looking through one, not on the data sheet. And four tubes mean four tube data sheets and four times the tube price, which is why the DTD PNVG-18 sits at the top of the range. Both colour variants sit under four tube panoramic night vision.
One line of its specification matters more than it looks: power comes from an external battery pack through a Fischer port, not from an AA cell in the housing. Why that counts is in the next section.
Weight, leverage and your neck
This is the point buyers underestimate most often, and it appears on no data sheet. What decides it is not the weight on the scale but the torque at the helmet: mass times distance from the pivot. A device sitting further forward pulls disproportionately harder.
So add up what actually hangs at the front: device, mount, lens caps. The DTD A4 LWNVM helmet mount weighs not more than 140 g and offers at least 33 mm of horizontal adjustment. That adjustment is not a comfort detail. It is the lever arm, and shortening it is the cheapest weight saving there is.
At the back you balance with a counterweight. An external battery pack at the rear of the helmet is battery and counterweight in one, and that is exactly why the PNVG-18 does not carry its power at the front in the first place. The DTD USBP universal battery pack is built for that role, mounts at the rear and works there as a counterweight to the device at the front. It does not fit the Jerry family, so ask us about your device's port before you order.
What feels light in the shop can form a different opinion after three hours on a helmet. That cannot be read, only worn.
The tube beats the form factor
When the budget has to decide between a form factor and a tube grade, the tube almost always wins. The form factor sets how you see: with one eye, with both, or all around. The tube sets whether there is anything in the picture at all when light is short.
The number this gets measured by promises more than it delivers. Read what the Figure of Merit tells you, and what it does not, ask for SNR and resolution separately instead of only the product of the two, and demand the data sheet for the specific tube with its serial number. Phosphor is the smallest of these decisions: white or green phosphor is a question of preference, not of performance.
Practical order: set the form factor by use, then put everything else into the tube grade. Plenty of people have done it the other way round and bought an impressive housing with a disappointing picture.
If you do this, buy that
- Observation from a fixed position, watching wildlife, occasional use: monocular. Light, cheaper, one eye stays dark adapted.
- A check round the yard, a night walk in familiar terrain, a look at a vehicle or a perimeter: monocular on a helmet, flipped up when you want it out of the way, and just as usable in the hand.
- Worn for hours at a stretch, movement over rough ground, work with your hands: binocular. The weight premium pays itself back in less fatigue.
- Team, fast movement, changing levels, tight spaces, driving: panoramic goggle. Peripheral vision here is not a convenience, it is the actual point.
- First device and undecided: monocular with the best tube the budget allows. It stays useful later as a second and backup device once a binocular joins it.

Law, delivery and the only honest test
Legally, the form factor changes nothing. The Swiss Weapons Act (WG, SR 514.54) names laser and night vision aiming devices as weapon accessories in article 4 paragraph 2 letter b. The decisive word is aiming. Observation devices, whether monocular, binocular or panoramic, are not on that list. For hunting, the hunting ordinance (JSV, SR 922.01) applies on top, which prohibits, in article 2 paragraph 1 letter e, night vision aiming devices and device combinations of comparable function as hunting aids. This is a summary of the statutory wording and not legal advice. Your own case is decided by the weapons office of your canton, and for hunting questions by the cantonal hunting authority.
On delivery: night vision and thermal equipment is controlled under the Goods Control Ordinance (GKV, SR 946.202.1). For a delivery inside Switzerland and to Liechtenstein that changes nothing for you. For the EU and the Schengen area, an End User Certificate and export clearance come first, before the device goes out. If clearance is not granted, we cancel and refund in full. We do not deliver to Russia, Belarus or sanctioned countries.
And the test that beats every form factor discussion: put all three on, one after another, in a dark room, ideally with your own helmet. After ten minutes you will know more about your decision than after ten data sheets. That is what the showroom in Villmergen is for, by appointment.
